It was particularly greedy for fuel during our 200-mile highway fuel-economy test, where it delivered a lackluster 21 mpg. Compared with other luxury compact SUVs, the Land Rover is thirsty. The Discovery Sport's EPA fuel-economy estimates are 19 mpg city, 24 mpg highway, and 21 mpg combined. 2020 Land Rover Discovery Sport Gets Hybridized.Land Rover Disco Sport Is Offbeat but Imperfect.2021 Discovery Sport Adds Tech and Safety Features. On the plus side, the Discovery Sport delivers a comfortable ride for cruising. Handling isn't particularly crisp, so don't expect to wring thrills from curvy back roads. We tested a 2020 model with the 246-hp engine and found it to be rather sluggish throttle response is lazy and the Disco Sport requires 7.5 seconds to reach 60 mph. The Disco Sport can even wade into as much as 23.6 inches of water (for those who dare) and tow up to 4409 pounds. Of course, standard all-wheel drive-along with a host of optional trail-rated equipment-helps the Sport glide over bumpy terrain and weather any storm. Engine, Transmission, and PerformanceĮvery Discovery Sport has a turbocharged four-cylinder powertrain that makes 246 horsepower. We experienced that in our test vehicle, and it comes across a bit gloomy. We'd suggest you pick something other than the all-black interior. Land Rover offers several ways to personalize the Discovery Sport's styling, including a black roof, a host of wheel designs, and premium metallic paint finishes. A pop-up third row is available for those who need it. We'd splurge on the optional 14-speaker Meridian Surround Sound stereo, keyless entry, and 14-way power-adjustable front seats with heat. The SE model is the perfect place to start as it has several desirable features that the S model doesn't, such as premium LED headlamps with daytime running lights, a power-operated rear liftgate, a digital gauge display, and blind-spot monitoring. Land Rover has discontinued the P300 models, opting to offer only the P250 powertrain-a 246-hp turbocharged four-cylinder-for 2021 last year's base model and the top-spec R-Dynamic HSE have both also been discontinued in favor of a simpler four-trim lineup. Elsewhere, a new cabin air filtration system is available and a more comprehensive list of driver-assistance features have been made standard. Buyers can augment the Discovery Sport's new infotainment system with the optional Online Pack package, which adds a Wi-Fi hotspot, embedded Spotify music service, and a wireless smartphone charging pad. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are now standard across the lineup. The new system boasts a simplified menu structure as well as over-the-air update capability. The junior Discovery model receives Land Rover's new Pivi Pro infotainment system that launched on the 2020 Defender. Still, for buyers who want considerable off-road capability wrapped in a stylish package, the Discovery Sport is one of the few choices in this mostly on-road-focused segment. Its cabin is spacious and offers an optional third row of seats, but its environs aren't as refined as what you'll find in the BMW X3 or the Mercedes-Benz GLC-class. The trade-off is that the Discovery Sport's on-road driving experience isn't as engaging as rival SUVs'. The Discovery Sport's off-road driving modes, hill-descent control, and wading sensor system provide more off-road capability than you'll find in an Audi Q5 or a Porsche Macan. With a complement of desirable features, standard all-wheel drive, and an upscale-but-rugged appearance, the 2021 Land Rover Discovery Sport is a distillation of the brand's go-anywhere-in-comfort ethos.
